National Moth Week festivities under way in NJ

EAST BRUNSWICK — National Moth Week festivities are under way in New Jersey.
Organizers of the global citizen science project hope to shine a light on moths and their amazing beauty and biodiversity.

National Moth Week was established last year by members of the nonprofit Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission. This year, roughly 400 moth-spotting and

educational events are registered in all 50 states and nearly 40 countries from July 20 to 28.
Last week in The Star-Ledger, Elisabeth Egan explained how they prepared for the event that got under way Saturday with several events staged in East Brunswick.
However, Saturday's main night event ‐ a moth viewing by flashlight — was postponed due to a threat of severe thunderstorms. That’s where white sheets and mercury vapor lights are set up in a park and trees are “painted” with sweet moth bait.
